Herbert Linge: Pionier in Pole-Position (D)
Herbert Linge: Pionier in Pole-Position (D)
Three milestones in automotive history are inextricably linked to Herbert Linge of Weissach:
• His contribution to the technical development of the Porsche 911.
• His involvement in the planning of the Porsche Development Center
in Weissach. • The founding of the ONS Safety Squadron, with which he was responsible for safety on racetracks for over 20 years
alongside Formula 1 magnate Bernie Ecclestone . Niki Lauda, among others, owes his life to this rescue squadron.
Linge played a major role in the development of Porsche, notably through his tireless efforts to improve motorsport safety. The fact that Porsche sports cars still bear the "Carrera" designation is due to his participation in the Carrera Panamericana, one of the toughest car races in the world during the 1950s. It is certainly no coincidence that the new Porsche will be called the Panamera. The "Targa" designation for Porsche sports cars harks back to their racing successes in the Targa Florio, a classic race from the early days of automobile manufacturing. Linge also doubled for star Steve McQueen in the monumental racing film "Le Mans."
