This guide is primarily aimed at those considering acquiring one of the infamous "iron heaps" from Russia. Few motorcycle brands polarize opinions as much as Dnepr/Ural. Prejudices abound, and a certain degree of caution is certainly warranted, because motorcycles are, after all, meant to be ridden. What good are they if they sit in the workshop getting flat tires? After more than 100,000 km on his 1993 Ural 650 "without any particular incidents" (by the standards of a Ural rider), the author set to work compiling experiences and interesting facts about the history and technology – from the great-grandmother and BMW copy "M72" to the current generation of Ural sidecar combinations – into a guide that will also delight the experienced Russian motorcycle rider. The "genealogy" in the appendix serves as a quick reference in the jungle of production models.
